1) no body...this leaves the question up to a lot of interpretation.

2) what happens if the list has an odd number of items list?

3) what happens if there are a prime number of items in the list?

You might also be interested in my columnize() filter[1] which 
could be modified to use a heuristic like above, or it can be 
used as-is to divide into N columns, padding out the last row if 
needed.
