Don't feel too bad about missing that. I know it's true, for example, but I wouldn't have guessed that was going to be the cause of the problem (and even if I'd seen network traces, I'd guess it would take me a while to notice the bad domain name). I would suspect it's not particularly common knowledge, since it just doesn't come up that much. If that was indeed the issue, then it's a real edge-case. Glad you solved it in the end, though.
