Not directly related to email, but see "The Emperor's New Security 
Indicators" that was presented at the 2007 IEEE Symposium on Security 
and Privacy. 

My googling came up with the PDF at IEEE Xplore : 
<http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpls/abs_all.jsp?arnumber=4223213>  If you 
can't get it there, there are many other sites that have the PDF.
