I'm not sure what you mean by "notification".  I would take that to be
things like a regular FAQ, Hold notification from moderation, DSNs for
delivery issues, scheduled downtime, posting policy, and so on.  These
actually are authored by the BBS (or MLM).

I don't understand what is interesting about "From is Author" in this
context.  Subscribers might confuse user posts with "official"
notifications?

This is a private agreement between the MLM and the poster; the From
munging is done on the authority of the poster.  But this has never
caused confusion that I know of.
