My Argument is against it. I think the market they
are choosing is the Gamers market or the market for the people who want to
use the PC as a Surround Sound Medium possibly. Firstly i ask someone who used
my computer as a recording workstation would have no use for this motherboard,
its going to run hot firstly. Secondly it only uses the tube for audioplayback.
And thirdly i'd have to use the soundcard that is built in and that would only
be for playback (and AC'97 compliant RealTek with 5.1 Channels). The reason i
think its cool is because it gives the manufacturers something to look into. For
instance if i am creating sound cards i might loook at this and say well here is
this 400 dollar recording sound card, maybe if i use a really high tech A/D and
D/A Converter on it and integrate a real good microphone preamp there would be
people interesting in such a product, let me look at the specs from the AOpen.
Thats why i think this is cool. Eventually i would like to see hybrid vacuum
tubes / solid state components make a return to computers, they are more
expensive but are a better medium in ways to solid state transistors. They are
also much more high quality.

right here!
I
haven't actually seen the link coz it doesn't work for me for some reason, but
I agree...Why on earth would you want to combine all that stuff
together??
I
spend a lot of time choosing components that will remove any audio path as far
away from the Base unit as possible (i.e. external soundcard etc..).. Why
would I want to build more stuff directly onto the motherboard?
You
might as well make a motherboard with everything built in... Including Monitor
and Mackie Mixing desk!!! lol!!
But
seriously, I'm interested.. What's the arguement for it?
cheers,
Nick
I find this to suspect still. Doesn't feel
right. I think a better solution is to get a quality D/A Converter from
there run it through a proper tubed amplifier into some quality speakers.
This will yeild the results you are looking for. Integration into your
motherboard is to risque, especially if the chipset they used starts to
generate problems within your apps or peripheral devices.

tube right here!
From what I can gather, the tube is a part of a built in
preamp on the motherboard. There is an integrated sound card, but
the preamp has inputs, so you can run your own sound card or anything else
you want through the tube (woot!). According to their specs, the
tube has a MTBF (mean time between failure) of 4000-5000 hours, so easy
replacement is a must. I can't find anything on the actual model of
tube they use, but I'd guess they would want to use off the shelf
components, rather than trying to make their own. Check out some
more specs at http://english.aopen.com.tw/products/mb/ax4b-533tube.htm.
Other tasty features include support for running your audio out the front
of the computer breakout box style, and a built-in S/PDIF interface.
I think I just might have to look at upgrading my system now.

Well I have like billions of questions on this
now. Firstly how is this going to help audiophiles? Is it that it
has an Integrated Sound card and that the sound card works with Tube
Technology? What happens when the tube (and it will) gives out?
Easily changed like on tubed amps? Is it a standard tube? (KT88 or
similar). Let us the tube heads know.
TRK.
