Yeah, that's how 5.1 works but in SX you only get one pan slider for a stereo channel, 
not one for each (L and R).. 
Unless I've missed something that is.. 

I gotta say that this is really starting to piss me off... I hope Steinberg sort it 
out at some point. :(

cross over points of around 100-250hz and maybe upto 400hz depending on the 
kicks should be ok.

I'm sure that in SX ( i reverted back to 5.1 til i upgrade) you can just 
turn the dails on the mixer till they are both central which will produce a 
mono signal.  Then on the break on a different channel, have the panning on 
full spread.

I'm not sure if i understood your question right but if i haven't, take the 
piss out of me for being a thick twat!!
