1. Why do you use electronic instruments instead of traditional
instruments?
Partly due to the sound, convenience, space and price. Plus the area between what is electronic very blurred that I don't feel there is a distinction. Just because a piano is amplified by electricity, does that make it an electronic instrument? But for most of us it's simply impossible to get the instruments we need, play them to a competant level and learn how to record them (recording live instruments WELL is hard to do) 2. What kind of equipment do you use? How do you use it? Mostly based around a pc computer, turntable and keyboard. I create drums from samples on the pc, basslines from keyboard (they tend to sound richer) and turntables as a source for samples. 3. Is the equipment easy or hard to use or 'pick-up'? I would say it's easy to pick up but hard to master to a professional level. There are a lot of untold secrets. But regardless, at the end of the day as with all music, you may know how to use/play but unless your compositional idea is solid, it's still gonna sound like crap. 4. Would friends, family or collegues that have used your equipment agree with that answer? I think so yes. With a possible exception to an older generation (ie: non computer age would struggle to learn the tools) 5. How do you interact with the technology? - Do you stand or sit while using it? I usually sit but stand at the keyboard and turntables - Do you like twiddling the knobs? If it improves the sound yes. 6. What kind of music do create with the technology, if it can be categorised? drum n bass, and atmospheric (without any beat pattern) 7. Would it be possible to create similar music using traditional instruments? Yes, definately since DnB is mostly based around samples from traditional instruments 8. Who do you create music for? Myself and labels/dj's 9. Have you released any music - mp3, CD, LP? yes all 10. Do you perform live? I have performed live but not with DnB (yet), I dj (which you could argue is live due to the ammount of manipulation we do and it includes an mc), and have played solo piano before 11. What reaction do you get from people when you tell them that you create electronic music? Interested, supportive, impressed. 12. Do you ever think there will be a standard piece of electronic music- making equipment? If you can count a computer as standard then yes, I think a computer is already the standard. Mixer or sampler would be a close second. 13. If it did appear what features would it need to have? n/a 14. Can you see this type of music- making generating virtuoso artists in the way Hendrix was to the electric guitar? Absolutely... just look at Aphex Twin. He takes electronic equipement and morphes it/changes internal components so that it creates his own unique sounds. No one has been able to duplicate what he can do with an instrument. -- I would be interested if you could email it to me that'd be great. Good luck. Phil Rene
