Blind experimentation is a shot in the dark. It's great for effects and tweaking, but when it comes to creating melodies or basslines, I find it's a little ineffectual. A little underlying methodology behind experimentation goes a LONG way.
Do you play any instruments? when i'm REALLY stuck, i'll pull out my guitar and play some basic major and minor chords, see what notes the chord is comprised out of, and then attempt to create a bassline using those notes in some fashion. you'll have to fuck around with the arrangement, of course, to find a good (read: aurally pleasing to YOU) melodic progression. Don't try too hard though cause i mean you can have a good bassline that has only 2 notes, or one that has a ton more - it all really just depends on the purpose the bassline will serve in the track (keep in mind it doesn't HAVE to be the focal point for the tune).
