i think the best thing you can do to keep the bass interesting is to run it a though a couple separate effects chains simultaneously. pipe it though a separate effects chain, run it though a hipass so you just get the mid/high textures. then you can apply distort, flange, echo or whatever to that to make the sound a little more complex. this way the low end of the bass remain clean, hard and centered while the top end can sound a little more interesting.
another trick is you can layer different bass sounds together to create a new more complex sound if you are careful to eq them well. on my last track i put a high pass on my main distorted bassline to cut out the very low end, then i layed a low detuned saw bass on top of it to replace the low end... this way i can easily add in and take out the super low end for dramitic effect when i want to and the saw tone is just a little more pure in the low end than the distored one was. but mostly it just takes a *lot* of time and experimentation. good luck. -josh _____________________________________________________ you need more drum'n'bass -- http://mp3.com/vitriolix Jason Haller wrote:
Hi everyone,
First off, I'd like to say hello to all the producer lists subscribers and I look forward to participating on this list.
Second of all, a little question:
I've been producing dnb for a bout a year now, writing my own beats, breaks etc which I'm fairly happy with but what I need to do is start developing my skills in the art of killer basslines.
I can get some good sounds but I'm never happy with the results of blind experimentation.
Does anyone have any good advice on how to write a good bassline?
Jay
