I think worrying about this topic detracts from your ability to focus on what REALLY matters.
This topic extends to just about everything in life - sports, governments, religions - seriously EVERYTHING. "WHO'S NUMBER ONE?" My answer - who cares? It is healthy to adopt a competitive attitude, but I think anybody who gets heated about this argument oughta take a step back and apply the need to compete not as a vs. between oneself and everyone else, but instead to oneself vs. oneself. That's the only way any sort of positive outcome will result from it. In the end it's all just a bunch of bullshit rhetoric anyway. You might as well be arguing about the existence of God or the problems with the concept of free will. Find something else to do with your time.
