For ac input, diodes gives you awful ac input currents, see e.g
fig. 2 in:

 http://www.vishay.com/docs/88868/anpfc.pdf

which is (somewhat) corrected by PFC. It has nothing to do with a
switch mode power supply per se, the problem is in the rectifier.
