No such separation is possible - the DNS is the Domain Name _System_. That _system_ is the combination of: - the wire protocol - the authoritative servers (from the root down) that use the protocol - the namespace defined in the ICANN-controlled root zone - all of the recursive and stub resolvers that know how to query it.
