Dear Friends of Philippine Liberalism:

October merged into November as various activities followed one after the
other. The Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats held its second political
management workshop. This was a follow-up to last years successful one. These
seminars are aimed at strengthening the institutions of political parties. Last
years focused on management structure and organizational development, and this
years touched upon: ideology and political message, finance and media.

The Young Liberals and Democrats of Asia on the other hand focused on human
rights training. Against the backdrop of the Cambodian Killing Fields that the
participants visited, the young liberals learned documentation, research and
advocacy work. A strong Cambodian participation was a welcome sign of the
growing involvement of young Cambodians in democratic politics.

Speaking of human rights, the Foundation continued its sponsorship of the
Ateneo Human Rights Centers internship program. This years batches had
firsthand encounters with the effects of property rights in community
development. The interns noted that communities that held titles to their land
had fewer basic fears and were more concerned about business opportunities and
familial relations. This is a concrete example that property rights can give
people security and form a foundation for growth.

On the topic of growth, FNF again partnered with the Philippine Economic
Society on its 46th annual meeting. This years topic focused on
competitiveness in the globalizing economy. It was very timely given in this
global financial crisis, only countries that can reposition their economies
will thrive. It was followed by the annual meeting of the East Asian Economic
Association, giving Manila a weekend of top-class economic analysis for those
willing to pay attention&

Until next time & stay tuned!
