RHETORIC AND DEMOCRACY IN THE AGE OF THE INTERNET

An interdisciplinary conference organized by Trinity College
in cooperation with the
Intercollegiate E-Democracy Project

Hartford, Connecticut, USA
June 22-24, 2001

This conference will bring together teachers, students, researchers,
commentators, activists, and others interested in the contemporary
state of public discourse and the complex role of education in
preparing active citizens for the electronic democracies of the
future.  We will be organizing discussion groups that will offer
participants an unusual opportunity for conversations across academic
disciplines, public roles, professional lives, and geographic areas,
from the local to the global. Please join us if you are interested in
exploring topics related to:

- public writing and rhetoric
- political speech and debate
- the intersection of literature and politics
- activism and protest in the new public square
- the media and political campaigns
- the Internet and Information Society
- deliberative democracy and cultures of argument
- the shaping of the online public commons
- service learning and civic engagement
- dialogic literacies and new educational technologies
- the relation of language to power and the public sphere

We invite proposals for papers, panels, workshops, symposia,
roundtables, teaching demonstrations, poster presentations, artistic
performances, and other innovative forms of interaction.  Submit a
200-word abstract of your proposal by March 15, 2001: By email to

program committee, with prompt notification.  Proposals are also
