considering all in all the best search widget solution IMO is the plain ol skool with a plain input-field and a normal submit button with the value "Search!".
why? one, because it works and two because all the alternatives either look failed in some browsers or simply dont work in some browsers.
_if_ we want a nice looking search widget (ie the same style as the prev|next) there is no way to solve it nicely for ns4+ i think. the only solution is with no submit-button, so you have to press enter - which btw is similar to perl.com i think.

however, _if_ we decide to go with a search widget (in whatever version) that have the same look & feel as the prev|next widget i suggest we use a download widget in the same style, something in the vein of the attached crude screenshot.
I like your snapshot, it perfectly fits the design. These new pdf/src widgets are text and not images, aren't they? or is it src|pdf as image and the size as a text?
