enclosed a mac ns4 gif

this is invalid html:
<input type="image" src="../images/arrow.gif" border="0"></td>
                                            ^^^^^^^^^^^

What's valid html that keeps netscape from placing the border around the image?

i am 99.99999999% sure you can't do that. sorry. ./allan

I can't do what?

I know it doesn't validate. What I asked was how to prevent NS4.0 from
placing the border around the submit image *and* make it validate. I do
not know of a way to accomplish that. So, if someone has a constructive
suggestion, please tell.

I did so, the ads are doing that: class="img-border" is probably what you want:

I looked at the Books links, of course, but those are not submit buttons.
I tried <span> and <td> styles. I could change the border in other
clients, but not NS4.0. I tried using a submit button, I tried moving the
button on top, in the middle, and on the bottom. I asked for other design
examples. No acceptable side-bar search box as been found. We tried it at
the top of the page, and it was rejected there, too. So either someone
needs to find a solution or we compromise. What other option is there?

I said my opinion long time ago. I prefer the search on the top where it all plays dandy. If you guys prefer it on the left side, please help Bill to figure out how to make it nice.

Validation is a tool I use when writing HTML. If the real world uses NS4.0
still and we care about those users, and border=0 doesn't break anything
else, I don't really care if a validator says it's not perfect, as long as
I understand why it's saying that. What I do care about the people viewing
it. When a new browser comes out that breaks because of border=0 it's
likely that NS4.0 will be long gone.

So far what we were trying to accomplish is a perfect solution
for the latest non-buggy browsers and usable solution for older
or buggy to some degree browsers. I don't have the numbers in hand, but even
if we have 1% of users with NS4 and they are stuck with it and they cannot use
the new site, what's good have we made over the current site? I hope you agree
with me.
If no one comes with a satisfying solution for the left bar search, we simply move it to the top, per previous Bill's demo and move on. It takes too much of Bill's time which could be put to some other good use. Therefore those willing to keep the left search, it's time to defend your choice.
