Laughable. The buyers on the auction system are mostly "domainers" who know
better and will be transferring the domains out to places like enom,
moniker or even godaddy so they can get renewal rates at $6.95 or less. What
exactly can you upsell to that crowd? DNS forwarding for a $1 month per
domain when every other registrar and even parking services are giving it
away for free?
Don't get me wrong - the price drop makes sense considering the quality of
the vast majority of names dropping through the auction system. Requiring
the resellers to become indebted with the renewal fee does not.
I've also found that my users have switched over to going to
tucowsauctions.com which lands them at ddirect.domainauctionservice.com once
they found out they were dealing with a reseller and not tucows directly.
How did I figure this out? I suspended a bunch of abandoned, inactive
accounts that had not placed bids on the system for several months. Once
those accounts were suspended the users emailed me in a panic wanting to
know why their auction account had been suspended and insisted that they had
placed several bids and won several names over the past few months.
