As it turns out, it is... kinda. When authcodes were first introduced apparently they were 6-16 chars long, and we coded for this length. As time went on the spec extended it to 32 characters, but auth codes longer than 16 were so rare it took a while for this to pop up.
We have an enhancement slated to extend the character length to 32 but until it's in place I'd recommend trying to shorten the authcode at the other Registrar. Failing that (and we know how well some Registrars handle exit relationships...) get in touch and quote bug 14400 and we'll try a workaround.
