I'm one of the authors of qpsmtpd, a fully RFC-compliant SMTP engine 
(drop in for qmail-smtpd originally), written in Perl (and no, it isn't 
slow, thanks for asking), so those dreams are all too familiar to me.

I keep wanting to spend some time writing a Finite State Machine to 
handle the entire SMTP transaction (which would make it easier to plugin 
SMTP extensions), so you can see how far down that slippery slope I've 
already fallen... :0
