I can't remember when I first heard Music Man. Undoubtedly around 1975 or
1976. As a horn player (trombone), I quickly became aware of the song's
wonderful horn lines. But the very best thing about Music Man is the final
sequence of guitar solos, commencing at the end of the vocals.
Special preparations are needed to fully enjoy Music Man's final guitar
baccanalia. You can do it in you own home. The secret ingredient
is...headphones. Slap 'em on and enjoy the song. Then listen closely as
Tom Johnston finishes singing. First there's a few measures of
rhythm-section buildup (very fine). Then comes a 16-bar, single-guitar solo
(Tom?) that leaps and plays between the channels. This solo is akin to a
motorcycle idling, getting ready to go. After that, a simple, innocent,
three-note pickup leads into the grand finale, a bombastic, three-guitar
solofest! There's a left-channel guitar, a right-channel guitar, and a
center-focused guitar. The center (whom I like to assume is Skunk Baxter,
but who knows?) mostly plays an octave below and in longer tones, and serves
to move the sound to the lower center of the phones while the other two
guitars soar above on the sides. It's a pretty amazing effect.
Another thing I like to do is "mind jam" the Music Man solos endlessly while
I ride my bike. It makes my commute more interesting, as I get all wound up
and start cheating on stop signs, stoplights, etc. Music Man, with its
choppy, energetic riff, translates better to a mountain bike than to a road
bike. Along that same vein, it's more suited to an Indian pony than a
thoroughbred. That's why it's a favorite of mine.
'Nuff said and best regards to you all,
Dave from Denver

I got my box set yesterday and immediately put all 4 disks in the player and
started listening. What a great compilation. I am soooo excited to have
this in my collection!
I am not the expert that most of you are, but I was immediately drawn to
Music Man on disc 2, track 3. My player started w/ that disk and I
immediately started jammin to the beat when Music Man came on. I have never
heard anybody on the list mention this song, is it one of anybody's
favorites?
This brings me to a question. Do most of everybody's favorite songs come
from listening over and over to a song or do most of you hear a song for the
first time and it becomes your favorite? I for one listen to a song and
like or love it immediately. For me when I first heard Jesus is Just
Alright, it was love at first hear! Let's hear from the masses.
