It's really interesting that Eric Clapton should come up in this discussion.  
A few weeks ago on the radio I heard a recording of Clapton in concert 
covering Dave Mason's "Only You Know and I Know".  I don't know how old the 
performance was, but it sure did sound a lot like "Eyes of Silver" (I came in 
after the song had started and at first thought it was the Doobies from the 
sound of the guitars).  Made me wonder if he had taken a cue or two from the 
Doobs.  Maybe there's a mutual admiration thing going on?  ;-)
