Hi Archie,

First up, there's no reason you should lose any data unless there is an
issue with the integrity of the disk, in which case reinstalling on to a
duff disk is asking for problems anyway.

Boot the machine with a live cd and back up that data on to an external
hard drive or similar, if you haven't done that already. You might also
want to test the integrity of your disks if you suspect there may be
problems there.

You mention that you are able to run grub from the cli - have you tried
reinstalling grub? Admittedly you shouldn't have to do this unless the
configuration of your hard drives has changed in some way.

Can you think of any changes to your system that might have occurred
prior to this issue surfacing?

Finally, you might want to include the relevant parts of your grub
configuration file plus details of your hard drives and partitions that
might help us find out why this has occurred.
