The newer Xorg releases together with HAL can autoconfigure X without there 
being an xorg.conf file. You could try renaming the existing xorg.conf to 
something else and the reboot the box. The netbook I'm using to write this 
doesn't have an xorg.conf, just an /etc/hal/fdi/policy/*.fdi file that is used 
to load the touchpad settings.
