Sorry Ralph, I just reread what I posted, it's /etc/default/grub that I don't 
have.  In fact I do have /boot/grub/grub.cfg, which is very complicated and 
isn't intended (as I see it) to be edited directly  This is ultimately what 
gets changed through the process that you mentioned.

I'm getting old you know ;-)
