Well I gave up trying to fix this and went for a clean install.  It takes a 
while of course, because I had to reinstall all the apps that are not put on 
by default, but the system is running very nicely and I started at about 2 pm 
today (that includes downloading and burning the disc).

All of my issues seem to be fixed, although I had to check the KDE bugs system 
to find out the answer to Amarok crashing, (you need to disable third-party 
scripts in ~/.kde/share/config/amarokrc BTW; I renamed it to .old and it 
worked).

I'll let you know if anything else crops up.
