I don't think I've ever seen that before. However, I'm not sure what problem
it's solving in this context. When we connect a laptop, we use a Wireless
Router re-purposed to act as a Switch on the main Pi network and a router for
the WiFi (which plays no part in the functionality of the system other than to
gives us a convenient way to download files containing Readings of water
levels etc).

The adaptor I need is to allow us to form the main network. Clearly that
device could be a way to get us an extra USB port, but would consume the four
GPIO pins that we will probably be using to carry the readings and control
signals between the Pi and the sensors, valves and pumps.

We have solved the problem of how to interconnect the Pis using simple USB
Ethernet connectors. The only question now, before I spend quite a bit of our
budget, is to get one that works

That's a useful page. Thanks.

It comes up in dmesg when the device is plugged in too.

I will be looking into this when this week's activities have been completed.

Thanks for your help.
