The political aspects to this are just as likely to stop this project as
the practical issues. My wife is somewhat sensitive about data
protection, so she has looked into this. The Government's own
announcement simply talks about nationality and other items needed by an
employer, but the interwebs talk about Driving Licence details and even
Bank Account details.
Some of you will recall that some years ago the Government wanted to
digitise our health records, The main problem with that was that they
wanted to sell our data to third-party organisations (read drug
companies) and this caused such a stink that they effectively abandoned
the project. As a result, we have to tell hospital consultants about our
health record because they can't read it. Similarly, our GPs cannot
access details of tests and things that they didn't order. (I had a
fairly major health test ordered by a hospital consultant some weeks
ago, but it still hasn't appeared on my record.)
I predict either a half-baked attempt that is full of bugs or abandonment.
