Hey Monty, The new checkForUpdate stuff shouldn't disturb the toolbar's loading, after I made it asynchronous... If it does, that's a bug. Could it be something else (please say yes! :))?
Could you try doing a Check for Update from the menu when you're up and running? I don't think we should disable the automatic version checking, since I think people won't remember/bother to check for updates manually. IMHO, of course.
