Summary: IE and taskbar lockup

Initial Comment:
I've spent a long weekend verifying that when I launch
IE from the deskbar (by searching for something), the
first time I click any link in the new IE window IE locks
up and so does my taskbar.

If I launch IE myself, (ie, click the IE icon) this problem
doesn't happen.

This problem started recently for me. I must have
upgraded to a newer version of DQDS. At first I
assumed I had some kind of virus. Nope. Then I
assumed my Windows was messed up. It had been a 4
years since my last reformat. I reformatted my HD and
reinstalled. Seriously.

I immedately installed DQDS and the problems started
immediately. I didn't suspect DQDS but after a while I
started to notice things working if I never used DQDS.
After using my machine with no problems for several
hours I turned DQDS back on and did a search and sure
enough, the first link I clicked in that window looked up
IE and the taskbar again.

I did notice once that it's not strictly a lockup because
one time while it was locked up I got a phone call.
While I was on the call, maybe 20 minutes in, all of a
sudden it unlocked. So, that could mean there is either
some timeout issue or some incredibly long loop.

I'm running American XP Pro with all the latest patches.

I guess I should go through the release notes and see
what changed but I thought I should log the bug

This issue is related to the automatic version checking in
DQSD. Recent problems as SourceForge meant that the version
checking code could not check if the most up-to-date version
of DQSD was running.

We (ha, I didn't do anything) have fixed this (we haven't
fixed SourceForge's problems, but we've stopped blocking the
shell just because SF is broken), but until a new version of
DQSD is built and made available, the best thing is to add
the following line:

checkForUpdate = false;

to your localprefs.js file. (Which will be in \program
files\quick search deskbar)

This will inhibit the automatic check.

I'm having the same issue and also spent a few days trying to
track it down. IE and taskbar hangs on first link clicked in IE
window opened with DQDS. I just installed the latest patches
released by MS today, geez, can't tell the date anymore
without the taskbar, and now i'm getting an error message,
"Unable to instantiate DQSDTools.Launcher
Automation server can't create object."

It's stopped working. I just reinstalled it thinking i had the
problem licked. Geez i miss this utility when it's not working.

Dittto!
Same symptoms but with Windows 98 SE instead of XP. I
tried some of the same process of elimination approaches and
it always came back to my recent download of DQDS. Use of
the search bar always hangs IE and also makes some (most)
of the icons disappear in the system tray! Using ctrl-Alt-Del
to remove the listings for explorer (windows explorer, not IE)
and the hung search window, restores IE functions but the
missing icons in system tray stay missing.
