However, I believe that there may be a problem with the program. For several months I have had trouble with my machine waking up from the sleep or suspend mode. It will sometimes take several attempts before the hard drive is correctly accessed and the screen restored to its pre-sleep condition. It once failed to wake up after repeated attempts and this required a reboot and then the system was so messed up that Win 98SE had to be reinstalled. I couldn't figure out what was causing this problem but recently after a particularly slow wake up I found that the Quick Search Toolbar was missing! This got me to thinking and I realized that the trouble started about the time I first installed the program. Over the past couple of weeks I have experimented with the sleep mode with the Quick Search Toolbar both on and off. I have not encountered the problem with the program off, but the problem does occur most of the time with the program active. I am careful now to de-activate the Quick Search Toolbar before letting the machine go into the sleep/suspend mode. I did a quick Google search to see if there was anything on the web concerning this problem, but I found nothing so I assume that it may be unique to my machine. Also tried to access the FAQ list but was unable to get it to load. I did not find it in the problem listing. I use the Win98SE power management scheme, and have varied the times and sequence of times with no effect on the problem. I am using version 3.1.4 of the program and version 6.0 of the Internet Explorer. My processor is a 667MHz P-III on a MSI MS-6337 motherboard with an Award BIOS and 256Mb of memory. I really don't expect anything to be done about this message. However, if other similar messages are received (or have been received) it will show that it is a more widespread problem. Many thanks for a great program. Tom McKee ---------------------------------------------------------------------- >Comment By: Shawn K. Bairen, Jr. (jbairen) Date: 2002-11-13 14:42 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=419566 My initial guess is that the keyboard hook is what keeps explore.exe open and hence causes problems on wake up. But I do not know how to verify or correct this. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: John W. Bairen, Jr. (jbairen) Date: 2002-11-08 10:18 Message: Logged In: YES user_id=419566 Earlier this year I was having a huge sleep/wake up problem. My PC was new so the MFGR just put in a new Mother Board. Since then I have come to suspect that DQSD is the culprit. Sometimes when I shut down my PC, I get a message that explorer.exe isn't responding and I have to click the End Task button. This NEVER happens if I didn't use DQSD (perform a search) during that boot up. So I don't think it is a big leap to suspect DQSD (especially since the DQSD DLL runs in explorer.exe). I think the same thing happens when the PC is going to sleep or hibernating. I think the DQSD DLL is hanging explorer.exe and thus somehow preventing a wake up. My solution was just to disable sleep/hibernate. The best solution would be for the DQSD DLL to respond to shutdown/sleep/hibernate better to allow explorer.exe to shut down better. Another possibility is Shutdown Pro. It is complete freeware, even with the name 'Pro'. It has a feature to force processes (like explorer.exe) to terminate on shutdown/sleep/hibernate.
