The other night, when making some antenna
adjustments, I had one of those moments some blame on age and others on
stupidity. I am blind but I don't blame it on that, it was just plain too
much knob twiddling for one day.
Anyway, here is what happened and my
question for the list. I was trying to make a table of tuner settings to
use to make band changes faster. I had just done some antenna work which
necessitated this job. At any rate, I had the amp set to 40, the rig on 60
and the tuner trying to make the two work together. Something in the amp
arced. My XYL can see it reflected on the wall behind the amp through the
fan compartment. It does not arc on 20 and up but does on the three lower
bands. I have connected it to a dummy load to test to make sure it isn't
just the low band antenna and it exhibits the same behavior.
I haven't taken the cover off yet to look
but discussions with another owner in the local area indicate that the problem
might be C42 which is the 307 Pico Farad cap switched in for the lower
frequencies. I have called Drake and they no longer make or sell this
cap. IN fact, they said they made it themselves because they couldn't find
it anywhere else.
So, here's my question. Does anyone
on the list know of a source for replacing this cap? If not, are there
other options? Again, the problem might not be the cap but I want to make
sure I have all bases covered.
