Welcome to Drake ownership.....!

*Now.....Gents, I need schooling......* 1) I am sure the original Drake ( Astatic ) 7077 microphone could be found for an 'arm or a leg' ; will a Shure 444D work OK?
Recommendations?

The 444D is a good microphone, and will work just fine with the TR-7. The "Impedance"switch on the bottom of the microphone should be set to the "Hi" position unless the TR-7 has been modified. There is an internal jumper that can be set to use a Lo impedance microphone, but almost certainly hasn't been done.

2) Several eBay Sellers (can't trust half of them) state that the power OUTPUT could be set to >150 watts SSB (my only mode) as long as the cooling fans were installed on the radio and power supply. I could use a little more punch; but I don't like to abuse gear either.
Your advice?

Yes, the output power CAN be set to >150W, but the chance of a PA or PS failure is increased FAR MORE than the little bit of extra power gained will make at the other end. The PA of the TR-7 is designed to be run at ~140-150W output, albeit with considerable safety margin. It will put out close to 200W if you disable the ALC, but again NOT a good idea, considering that even going to 200W is only a little over 1 (ONE) dB, which is described as "minimum discernible difference" in strength. For reference, one S-Unit is 5 or 6 dB depending upon brand. I set mine up for 140W on 20M, and the difference between 100 and 150W is a little less than 2 dB, again negligible.

3) I have read that there are sources for 'new' cases for the radio. This one has the sticky paint and the previous owner put a hole in the top near the PA grate (or is that suppose to be there?) !!! Either way, I would like a new 'non-sticky' case. Anyone??

They appear on E-Bay fairly often. KE9PQ has had them in his online store at

<http://www.marketworks.com/storefrontprofiles/default.aspx?sfid=86409>

has new ones on his site, although it appears to be down at the moment. Most new cases have a black wrinkle finish, rather than the original dark gray, but look good.
