After 30+ years, most any electrolytic has "served it's term". Not
to mention that plate transformers are LOTS more expensive than
caps..... Or that corrosive electrolyte and "aluminum confetti" are
not good things to have floating around inside a power supply. Not to
mention a "temporary" short taking out the regulator(s) and applying 20+
volts to PA transistors.
Yeah, I know there are "protective circuits/SCRs" to prevent this sort
of damage, but perhaps you've heard of Murphy?
Too many cost/benefit calculations come out the "wrong way" to chance it.
