I got some information, but lost your original message.
The R-8 started in 1991. Early serial numbers were the year, (one
digit), followed by the month, (two digits), followed by five digit
sequential serial number.
First R-8 would have been 10400001
The "new" serial number code (started in 1992) is as follows...
First digit = year
Second letter = Month (A=1, B=2, etc.)
Next four digits = Model Number (R-8 = 1290, don't know the others)
Last four digits = Serial number
So the first R-8 under this system would have been ...
2B12900001
R-8 production started in stopped in early 1995.
R-8A production started in mid 1995.
R-8B production started in 1997 and ended in 2004.
So the latest R-8Bs should have been ...
Earliest = 7 (? - L) (mmmm) (0001)
through
Latest = 4(A - ?) (mmmm) (nnnn)
The progression for the R-8B would be 7, 8, 9, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, each followed by A through
L, followed by whatever the four digit model number is for the "B" version (I'd
be interested in these if anyone has them!), followed by a sequential number.
Drake has NO retained serial number records.......
