Jim -
You may have a bad filter. Because of the mixing scheme used in the
TR-4, the LSB filter isn't always LSB!! You'll notice that the 40M
band tuned "backwards".
You may also have a dirty switch problem, but that is an incremental
process.
I would suggest "plotting" the two filter curves using the crystal
calibrator and S-Meter to see if they are both symmetrical and about 2.1
kHz wide.

I recently picked up a partially working TR-4 (late s/n) and have
started trying to bring it back to health. I want to get it receiving
properly before tackling the TX and need a little help.
Specifically, there is a problem with SSB operation:
80m - LSB fine, USB extremely weak
40m - USB fine, LSB extremely weak
20m - LSB fine, USB extremely weak
I have changed tubes that might be in the signal path, but it hasn't
helped.
Can't tell what 15m and 10m are doing as the crystal oscillator (V1a
6EA8) seems to be dead on those two bands (alignment hasn't helped,
changed tube).
I have cleaned all the switches. The sideband switch does seem to be
touchy, but no amount of jiggling will cause the correct sideband to
start working. I haven't done any voltage checks yet.
Any suggestions to get me going in the right direction would be
appreciated.
