Bob -

You have to look at the two red lights above the SIDEBAND switch. When the "wrong" light is lit, you have to turn the SIDEBAND switch to correct it. This is why the SIDEBAND switch doesn't SAY "USB" and "LSB".

If the audio is distorted on one sideband and not the other, the 9.000 MHz Carrier Oscillator is possibly off frequency. Another less likely possibility is that some TR-3 "soupcan" (named for the soldered tin-plate can) filters are going bad.

the SIDEBAND SW into X in order to copy LSB on 40
meters, otherwise it goes to USB and is just garbled rx.

But putting it in X makes for a much narrower bandwidth and the audio is 
distorted sounding although readable.
