Steve, The 40 meter thing sounds a bit like you are tuning up on a spur combination. Had a very similar thing on a T4XB. Seems to me that I found the xtal osc was not working correctly. But I will stress to look for the most simple things first. Your 100 watts out, use a receiver to make sure what you are a clean note and on the freq you think it is, then reevaluate.
