In answer to John, K5MO, no soldering has been done inside since I have
owned the amp. But the front Loading knob could very well have been bumped
while it was on the shelf for a year or so. I had the amp turned sideways to
avoid this, but things will happen!
I will eyeball it tomorrow (actually use my son's much younger eyeballs!)
before I go to HamCom.

Subject: Re: [Drakelist] L-7 Loading Capacitor Shoritng
Hi Roger
It sounds like the capacitor might have gotten damaged by something
knocking into the knob while it was sitting unused ? I can think of no
other way for the variable cap to be shorting out now, when it wasn't
before.
Alternately, did you perhaps drop something or bend a plate when repairing
the switch?
Whatever the cause , the cap is big enough to SEE what is actually
shorting as you rotate the shaft. Since it's only at one position of the
capacitor range, I'm betting there's a bent plate somewhere, that could be
straightened carefully. Did perhaps, a solder blob find its way in the
cap? Insects?

A problem has cropped up on my L-7. For no reason that I can tell, the
Load Capacitor is now shorting going from Dial Number 2 to 3. It never did
this before, but is doing it now. The amp was used for a year or so and
then sat on a shelf for a year. I decided to replace it with another lower
power amp.
I am getting ready to sell it, but the capacitor short prevents me from
collecting a good set of data. I can loosen the four long bars on the
capacitor and essentially "fix" the short, but that is not a proper cure.
Has anyone seen this type of problem before and fixed it?
I successfully repaired the power switch per the mods I found on the web,
so that is working great now. If only the cap would cooperate!
