Fellow Drakesters - I'm listening to my R-4A chassis sitting on the desk, monitoring 20 CW and everything sounds a bit drifty but otherwise great!
After carefully replacing that large brown capacitor I removed yesterday - which Garey and I determined to be the same as the large glass capacitor used on later circuits - and returning the lead dress to where it was, THEN replacing the 3000 pf SM cap with a temporary .003 disc ceramic, the signals sound great (no more chirp!) and the frequency isn't jumping about anymore! The dial calibration is now about 35 kc off, which doesn't surprise me given that these parts are typically 20% tolerance at least. As an extra bonus, signals seem much stronger, so the signal output level with the old cap must have been anemic as well. Yeah, it's drifting like a rubber life raft but it sounds MAAAHVELOUS! The areas around the leads of this capacitor are significantly lighter than the rest of the body. For the record, this capacitor looks like a standard SM cap that we always called "kidney beans". I got too wrapped up in the descriptions and didn't think! Now, to order a replacement of the correct type...
