Quite true. Even if you have 20/20 vision, magnification makes it better. You would be amazed at what you can miss without it. Solder connections can fracture over time, from mechanical stress and thermal cycling. It's not the same thing as a hairline crack in the solder fillet, but rather a seperation of the bond between the solder and the component(s).
