TR7 repair. I concur with John. Jeff Covelli does fantastic Drake repair. I
have been to his shop and had work done on a TR4 and power supply. If you are
using a microphone other than factory stock, I would advised including it with
your rig. I used a D-104 and Jeff adjusted it to peak performance. You will
not be disappointed

Good evening Howard,
More than likely, it's the filter caps aging out in the AC-4 power
supply. With the age of the equipment, it's advisable to replace the
capacitors anyway not to risk a short that could wipe out a transformer
winding, and render your supply useless.
There are a few 'kits' to upgrade your power supply, e.g. 'The Heathkit
Shop' which appears to be coming back online again, has a circuit board
and parts kit to replace most of the parts in the AC-4. I've purchased
two of those for my TR-4 and T-4XB power supplies.
In addition, ke9pq on eBay is selling an 'RL Drake AC-4 Power Supply
Rebuild Kit with Pre-Assembled Boards' for $79.99 plus shipping.
Lastly, you can just replace the capacitors by contacting Hayseed
Hamfest for 'drop in' replacement can capacitors at $133.00 for the
AC-3/AC-4 ReCap Kit. This makes the unit look more like it did
originally, vs. mounting new circuit boards inside the power supply. It
is, however, the most expensive option.
Best regards,
Phil Walker, WA2CLX

Hi Bob,
The closest one I have found to the Mid-Atlantic area is Jeff Covelli,
WA8SAJ, in Willoughby, OH. He has done several for me and is good, honest and
knows the Drake rigs inside and out. In fact, I just shipped him a TR-7A
for repair yesterday. Shipping cost, double boxed with the inner box being
the original factory shipping box plus additional insurance was $33.00.
73,
John, W4AWM
