It's the fact that new cards are always coming out that is the saving grace.  
We'll put fancy new stuff into the drivers for new cards, but leave the old 
ones as they were.  

We didn't actually pick up too many changes to the kernel module over the 
life of a card even when we didn't care about backwards compatibility...
