I think i know about that state.
Terminating it doesnt work in the end.

It does happen to me that way if corrupt 
the command buffers for the grafics chip.
This is either a direct programming error
like an inadequate amount of data after
a specific command package, an illegal
command or some situation where the chip
state is not as expected or e.g. two
threads made it to use the same buffer
at the same time (non atomic/non locking).

Or maybe its something not listed here.

try running the "vga_reset" tool before launching X11 again.
