Peter,

The status of the current Mach64 driver is very well documented by Leif on
it's homepage, http://www.retinalburn.net/linux/dri_status.html. As you
can see there, things aren't yet finished but are shaping up. There is a
problem though: so far no attempt has been made to get it running on
non-x86 machines. Support the PPC shouldn't be such a big endeavour since
the three subsystems that a DRI driver is based are already available for
your platform (the Linux kernel, XFree86 and Mesa), and the DRI kernel
module is also PowerPC aware. With your help testing surely it will be a
reality sooner, nevertheless you'll have to be patient considering that
the driver is still under heavy development and the developers are working
on this on free time.

The first thing that we'll need is that you download the CVS tree and
build it. You'll need kernel 2.4.x and XFree 4.1.0+ for this. Leif also
has a mini HOWTO on this on
http://www.retinalburn.net/linux/dri_HOWTO.html. It will surely fail to
build but we'll get started from that. Later on we might also get the
PowerPC system of SourceForge to do some nightly builds for you.

Even though you're no programmer, since you're gonna have a rough time
testing it all by yourself, please make a quick reading of the
DRI-Devel-FAQ at http://dri.sourceforge.net/doc/faq so that you get more
familiar with the terms and to be able to grasp the mechanisms how this
works (and why eventually it doesn't)!

I hope you don't get disappointed by the difficulties, but I assure you
that we are willing to make this extra effort if you're willing too.

Regards,

José Fonseca
