BTW, I've checked on windows whether hw accel occurs at 1024x768 on my
4mb card and it's quite clear that it doesn't. 

But windows dynamically allocates the back and depth buffer so e.g., I 
have hw accel on non-fullscreen windows on a 1024x768 desktop as long 
as they aren't too large. This is something that will be worthy to do
with DRI as well.
