I'm not 100% sure of the current state of the SIS chips DRI drivers so I'm CC'ing my answer to the dri-devel mailing list so that others can corroborate. AFAIK, there is (or was) support for the SIS 3xx drivers in the initial XFree 4.0.x releases (may even 4.1.x), but the driver never got ported to the new Mesa 4.x driver architecture due to lack of people interested. I recall a newbie ofered him self to try even without the specs, but I don't know if anything ever got made at all. So in summary, if you want DRI you have to stick with older XFree86 versions, unless someone steps into porting the deprecated DRI driver. Personally I do not have time to do it myself as I already have my hands full with other things, but I wouldn't mind helping by guiding all the way if somebody was willing to code it.
