It seems that the problem is triggered by the geyes Gnome Panel applet. With the default-tiny theme the Xserver grows at about 4kb in two seconds, with the default theme at about 4kb in one second. I looked into the geyes source. It uses shaped pixmaps to draw the eyes. I was also able to reproduce the problem with an example from the GTK-- v1.2 Tutorial which draws a wheelbarrow as shaped pixmap. Starting and killing that programme repeatedly leads to a growth of the Xserver in memory. I suspect this is another problem related to the recent XFree86 merge. Maybe someone wants to forward this to an appropriate XFree86 mailing list.
