I looked into this a bit more. It seems that the problem is triggered by
the geyes Gnome Panel applet. With the default-tiny theme the Xserver
grows at about 4kb in two seconds, with the default theme at about 4kb
in one second. I looked into the geyes source. It uses shaped pixmaps to
draw the eyes.

I was also able to reproduce the problem with an example from the GTK--
v1.2 Tutorial which draws a wheelbarrow as shaped pixmap. Starting and
killing that programme repeatedly leads to a growth of the Xserver in
memory.

I suspect this is another problem related to the recent XFree86 merge.
Maybe someone wants to forward this to an appropriate XFree86 mailing
list.
