I don't even get a desktop - the thing hangs at initialization time (probably when clearing the screen.

My hardware may actually have gone bad, for all I know. If I disable DRI (by using a 8-bit depth), then the server can be killed, but it still doesn't actually seem to ever get to the desktop. I'm assuming it is looping internally waiting for the chip to un-busy itself.

What if you take the dri/drm out of the equation by deleting the "dri" lines from XF86Config?
