try testing with the possible release-candidate drivers form www.schneider-digital.de for your purposes.
it might be that the fglrxconfig program does fail the detection of R350 based boards (like the ATI Radeon 9800), simply ignore any such message and give `startx` a try. if drivers do reject your adapter (which i would doubt) then use the ChipID option for overriding this.
