I've noticed, over the past few months of occaisionally using FreeBSD, that if I have to quit out of X, and relaunch the server, quite often I'm stuck with Indirect Rendering.
With some experimenting, it appears that /dev/dri/card0 gets locked and is in accessible the next time the X server starts (though this isn't consistent... Sometimes, killing the X server and restarting it doesn't result in this problem). Unfortunately, when it gets into this situation, there doesn't appear to be anything I can do other than reboot. I am unable to unload the radeon kernel module, lsof insists nothing is using /dev/dri/card0, and ps isn't show any unusual stray processes. As I'm spending more and more time in FreeBSD, this is becoming a serious problem for me. Is there anything else someone can suggest that I try? I am using XFree86 4.3.0. I have yet to grab the anything from CVS recently (mostly due to the SF cvs problems), so, in fact, this problem may already be fixed.
